Patent

A patent protects an invention, process, machine, manufacture or composition of matter, and the improvement of any of them that is new, useful, and non-obvious to a person skilled in the art.  In Canada, as in most countries, obtaining a patent therefore makes it possible to prevent third parties from making, selling, or using an invention for a maximum period of 20 years from the date of the patent application, for those countries for which registration has been obtained. A patent is therefore an asset, which can also be sold or for which licenses to use or market the invention can be granted to third parties in return for remuneration.
